A transparent comparison

Compare two ways of reaching work.

Enter your own assumptions for a typical month. Compare the remaining cost and time spent travelling, then check whether the timetable is realistic. This is not a tax mileage scale or a benefit eligibility calculator.

Use consistent inputs

Distance and travel time are one way. Daily costs include the return trip, such as parking or tolls. Include maintenance in the per-kilometre assumption if relevant; avoid also adding the same cost to the fixed amount. For public transport, enter zero per kilometre and your monthly subscription as the fixed cost. Enter zero only where there is actually no cost. If a value is unknown, obtain it before comparing.

Inputs stay in this page and are not saved. Confirm reimbursement with your employer; the tool does not infer an entitlement.

Formulas and worked example

  • Monthly distance = one-way kilometres × 2 × days on site.
  • Travel hours = one-way minutes × 2 × days ÷ 60.
  • Cost before reimbursement = monthly distance × cost per km + daily costs × days + fixed cost.
  • Remaining cost = cost before reimbursement − confirmed reimbursement.

Illustrative example, not a market price: 20 days, 15 km each way, 30 minutes each way, €0.20/km, €2 daily parking, €10 fixed cost and €0 reimbursement gives 600 km, 20 hours and €170 per month.

What the figures do not tell you

Check first and last services, connections, night shifts, fatigue and a backup option. A cheaper commute may take longer or fail to serve your working hours. This calculation leaves out any costs you did not enter, including insurance, depreciation or moving expenses.

Service Public: transport reimbursement for private-sector employees (French). Official source consulted on 9 October 2026. Apply the rules for your situation.
