Start with activities you actually master
Describe three to five activities you carry out independently: context, decisions, tools, results and responsibility. Include relevant employment, volunteering or personal experience.
Compare these activities with a registered certification’s skills. Similar titles are not enough: read the competency framework, skill blocks and assessments. If the gap is large, additional training or another certification may be more suitable.
Check the route for your certification
Search for the certification on France VAE. If listed, the platform describes the pathway and support options. Some certifications still use the ordinary route: identify the awarding body and instructions before creating a file.
Check the exact title, validity, awarding body, prerequisites and jury dates. The France VAE pathway does not yet cover public-sector employees, who should check the ordinary route. Do not pay for support solely on a guaranteed-diploma promise: the jury decides.
Build evidence from precise situations
For each assessed skill, choose a situation you know directly. Explain your own role, constraints, practical actions or analysis and observed results. Distinguish your contribution from the team’s.
Gather useful authorised material: attestations, anonymised reports, work samples or descriptions. Remove confidential information and obtain necessary agreement before sharing a document produced for an employer or client.
Examine support and funding
Request a quotation separating support, any additional training and certification costs. Compare what is included: choosing the qualification, file support, jury preparation and number of meetings.
Funding options depend on status, certification and pathway. France VAE explains current options and conditions. Check the funding decision timetable before committing.
Explain your experience without reciting the file
Prepare situations you can explain from memory: why you chose a method, how you checked results and what you would change. Practise answering questions about the limits of your experience.
The jury may award full or partial validation or reject the application. For partial validation, ask which skills remain to demonstrate and applicable timing, then compare further experience, targeted training or another assessment method.
Assess fit with a certification
Compare one framework competency with a situation you actually handled. List authorised evidence of your role and skills still to acquire.
- Before using the result
- Check the pathway, certification and awarding-body instructions; support does not guarantee validation.
- What to prepare
- An initial matrix of competency, situation, shareable evidence and gaps.
This is an editorial exercise to adapt to your circumstances. It is not an assessment, certification or administrative decision.
Frequently asked questions
Does VAE always remove the need for training?
No. The jury assesses skills against the framework. Additional training may help address missing skills.
Can only part of a certification be awarded?
Yes. Partial validation is possible; the jury result identifies validated and remaining elements.
Does a support provider guarantee validation?
No. It helps organise the pathway and file. The final decision belongs to the jury.
